Custodial officer assaulted – update

A custodial correctional officer from Woodford Correctional Centre remains in Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital following an alleged serious assault by a prisoner yesterday afternoon.

It is understood that the officer will require surgery on facial fractures after being assaulted at about 3pm yesterday afternoon.

Commissioner Peter Martin and Deputy Commissioner Andrew Beck visited the officer, his family  and colleagues briefly last night, and they are receiving regular updates on his condition.

Commissioner Martin described the alleged assault as disgraceful.

“This is a stark reminder of the challenges our officers face as they work to keep the safety and security of our prisons,” Commissioner Martin said.

“Everyone deserves to come home safely at the end of their shift. Even one assault is too many. I am committed to working with government to continue to improve safety for everyone,” Commissioner Martin said.

Our thoughts are with the injured officer, his loved ones and his colleagues at this time.
