Determined QCS officer’s epic ultra-marathon fundraiser

A Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) officer will put his fitness to the test when he tackles seven ultra-marathons in seven days to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention.

Custodial Correctional Officer (CCO) Kelly Duhig’s epic 350km fundraiser begins on Sunday 29 August in the Gold Coast Hinterland, with the CCO set to run a staggering 50km each day. The final day, 4 September will see Kelly line up for the Coastal High 50 trail run.

When he isn’t hitting the trails, or volunteering as an R U OK? Community Ambassador, Kelly manages prisoners at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Secure Unit. He is undertaking the running challenge in honour of his late son Luke, who took his own life at the age of 22.

The running challenge is being held ahead of R U OK? Day on 9 September and it is not for the fainthearted, with 2,000 metres of vertical gain each day.

“As the week goes by and you are at 10,000 or 12,000 metres of climbing, it becomes quite a challenge. I have trained hard for this because I want to complete each day,” Kelly said.

Kelly is being supported by his work colleagues and friends who will crew for him, providing water, food and encouragement.

Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations Gary McCahon said the agency was incredibly proud of Kelly’s fundraising initiative and for his determination to go above and beyond to promote the worthy cause.
