Positions filling fast at Capricornia Correctional Centre
Seventeen new custodial correctional officers joined the front line of public safety at a ceremony in Rockhampton today, further boosting the ranks at Capricornia Correctional Centre.
The expansion of the prison effectively doubled its capacity, and created the need for 232 new officers when it is fully operational later this year.
Many of those positions have been filled, with the latest group of recruits taking up permanent, full-time roles as CCOs.
Just 31 of the 232 new CCO positions are still available, with interested people encouraged to apply quickly to avoid missing the chance to join the QCS family. Successful candidates will start 10 weeks’ paid training at the centre in coming weeks.
In addition to CCO spots, some of the available positions are specialist roles, including two Senior Psychologists and a Psychologist, five trade instructors, support officers and a cleaner.
QCS Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations Gary McCahon congratulated the graduates completing the Custodial Officer Entry Program (COEP).
“The training our officers undertake ensures they are prepared to take on the challenges of working within a correctional environment each day,” DC McCahon said.
“Today’s graduates join their colleagues on the front line of public safety in a top tier agency, striving to help transform the lives of those in our care while performing a vital role to help keep the community safe.
“Every interaction our officers have with the people in our custody is a chance to change their behaviour for the better, increasing the security of the centre and, eventually, community safety.
“This expansion has created hundreds of jobs for locals and the financial benefits will be felt in Rockhampton for decades to come.
Deputy Commissioner McCahon said there are many career paths in corrective services across the state and encouraged people from all walks of life to consider the challenge.
“We are looking for passionate people to join the QCS family – people who want to transform lives on the front line of public safety and improve the safety of the community.
