Update- Officers injured – Townsville Correctional Centre
Queensland Corrective Services can confirm that two prisoners whom allegedly assaulted two officers in October at the Townsville Correctional Centre have been charged by police.
Detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit have concluded investigations into the alleged assault of two Correctional Officers at Townsville Correctional Centre on 21 October 2019.
Two prisoners will appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on 18 December 2019 each charged with two counts of Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm.
Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations Andy Beck said that officer safety is a priority for QCS and is pleased these matters are being put before the courts. It is important to send a clear message that violence towards our staff will not be tolerated.
‘Our officers have thousands of interactions a day with the most challenging and complex people in our society, but our officers deserve to go home safe at the end of every shift.” Deputy Commissioner Beck said.
‘While we can never remove all risk from our centres due to their dynamic nature, we are working tirelessly and are committed to making our centres as safe as possible for officers, prisoners and visitors.
I want to thank all our officers for the work they do every day and their commitment to making their community safe.’
QCS is continuing to support officers and their families.
