Capricornia Correctional Centre protest update

Queensland Corrective Services can confirm that all prisoners involved in yesterday’s protest at Capricornia Correctional Centre are off the roof and back in cells.

The last group of prisoners surrendered about 2:30am.

The centre remains in total lockdown.

Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations Gary McCahon and A/g Assistant Commissioner Northern and Central Command Darryll Fleming will be onsite at the centre today to debrief officers and inspect the damage caused by yesterday’s incident.

Deputy Commissioner McCahon praised responding officers, and thanked our public safety partners Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Health for their assistance and support during the incident.

The Corrective Services Investigation Unit is travelling to the centre to take up with local police and commence an investigation into the protest for consideration of criminal charges for prisoners who participated in the riot and caused property damage.

“The behaviour seen yesterday was simply disgraceful,” Deputy Commissioner McCahon said.

“The wanton destruction of property and the risks to our officers and other prisoners was totally unacceptable behaviour. Prisoners who participated will face consideration of additional criminal charges as well as internal discipline for their actions.

“I am incredibly thankful that there are no reports of officer injury at this stage. Our officers and our public safety partners faced a very dangerous situation yesterday, and everyone did a remarkable job to resolve the situation,” he said.
