QCS Top Dogs crowned

General Purpose dog Tallis and Passive Alert Drug Detection dog Thommo have been crowned QCS Top Dogs for 2020.

The QCS Top Dog winners were announced yesterday, with Townsville Correctional Complex and Wolston and Brisbane Women’s correctional centres scooping the pool in the five part virtual competition.

Ryan from Townsville Correctional Centre.

Scott with Thommo and Wolston Correctional Centre, A/g Chief Superintendent Joel Smith

GP dog Tallis and his handler Ryan wowed the judges with their in-synch, enthusiastic performance in the obedience and agility sections of the competition, while PADD dog Thommo and his handler Scott from Wolston and Brisbane Women’s showed their mettle in the search challenge.

Thommo was a firm crowd favourite at the Ekka last year, where he performed a number of public displays of his detection skills.

A number of certificates were presented to the competitors from across the State, including:

  • Best Original Performance: Ryan and Cooper, Townsville Correctional Centre
  • Best Boy: Luke and Ernie, Townsville Correctional Centre
  • Best Costume Design: Scott and Jaxx, Brisbane Women’s and Wolston correctional centres
  • Best Designer: Peter, Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre
  • Best Duo: Tim and Boss, Southern Queensland Correctional Centre.

Manager, Statewide Development and Standards Dog Squad, Alan Swann with Tim and Boss.

Wolston Correctional Centre, A/g Chief Superintendent Joel Smith with Scott and Jaxx.

Luke from Townsville Correctional Centre.

Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre, A/g Superintendent Andrew Robinson with Peter.

All our dogs and their handlers did a wonderful job in showcasing the skills and training our Delta Units use to keep our prisons secure and our officers safe.

A call was put out earlier this year to all Delta Units across Queensland to submit videos in four categories: obedience, agility, room searching and freestyle.

The submissions were judged by an expert panel comprising of Commissioner Peter Martin APM, Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations and previous Townsville Correctional Centre dog handler, Gary McCahon, and Manager, Statewide Development and Standards, Dog Squad Alan Swann.
