Work Camp provides much kneaded support for World’s Longest Damper record attempt
Workers from the Charleville work camp have played a vital role in preparation for a world record attempt to make the world’s longest damper.
Until 1994, Charleville held the world record with an impressive 75 meters, but the title was stolen away by a Swedish Scout Group, who produced a whopping 125 meter-long damper.
For the past four months, prisoners have been lending a hand in preparation for tomorrow’s attempt to bring the title back to the bush where it belongs with a mighty 150 metre damper, which will need to be cooked and extracted in one piece, and eaten on the day in order to qualify for the record.
The prisoners have prepared the site, loaded and stacked numerous ute loads of timber, and dug a 153 metre-long pit which will cook the gigantic damper, as well as unloading 500kg of flour and erecting fencing.
They also painted more than 100 buckets to hold the dough and will assist with coals and helping cook the behemoth bread if needed.
Acting Deputy General Manager Dave Gordon said that it’s a fantastic opportunity for the prisoners to help the rural community and also be part of a world record attempt.
“We aim to reintegrate prisoners back into their community when they are released, and working collaboratively with the people of Charleville is providing them with an opportunity to help bring the community together.” Mr Gordon.
“Not many people can say they have helped set a world record, so the prisoners are all very excited to be a part of something very unique and are enjoying the opportunity to give back to the Charleville community.”
Celebrity Bush Cook, Ranger Nick said that it is time to bring the record back to Australian soil.
“It seems damn right un-Australian, so let’s bring the title back! Join us out at Charleville, where we are gonna have a crack!” Ranger Nick said.
“The boys from Palen Creek have all been extremely polite and diligent with their work. Without their help, this event may not have happened. So thanks boys!”
